Israel attacks anti-wall protesters in WB
Israeli troops have fired tear gas on Palestinian and international activists protesting against Israel’s illegal separation wall in the occupied West Bank.
According to Palestinian sources, many people, among them international activists, were injured after Israeli troops fired tear gas to disperse anti-wall protesters in the village of Bilin, near the West Bank city of Ramallah, on Friday.
Most of those injured were suffering from tear gas inhalation.
Bilin has been the scene of weekly protests against Israel’s controversial separation barrier for years. But during this week’s demonstrations protesters also expressed support for a unilateral statehood bid that Palestinian Authority (PA) plans to make at the UN later this month.
The 66th UN General Assembly, due to open on 20 September, will vote on Palestinian state which would include the West Bank and Gaza, with East al-Quds (Jerusalem) as its capital.
The controversial separation barrier cuts Palestinian villagers off from vast stretches of their land and separates the West bank from the rest of the occupied territories.
Tel Aviv has captured nearly 60 percent of Bilin village to build the separation wall and expand illegal Jewish settlements.
Palestinians and international peace activists say that with the construction of the apartheid wall, the Israelis are forcibly and illegally annexing land owned by Palestinians.
Tel Aviv began constructing the wall in 2000. The International Court of Justice says the wall is illegal and should be taken down.
