5.9-magnitude quake strikes Peru

A relatively strong earthquake with the magnitude of 5.9 has jolted southern Peru, the US Geological Survey said.

The quake struck at 5:46 p.m. local time with an epicenter near the city of Ayacucho, some 250 miles south of the capital of Lima.

There has been no immediate reports of damage or injuries, according to AP.

Residents in crowded Lima poured into streets, alarmed by the earthquake.

Seismologists have measured the depth of the quake at 115 kilometers.
