Reasons behind Growing Concerns of Superpowers over Islamic Revolution of Iran

fist-islamic revolution

A glance at the impacts of geopolitical interests in the behavior of superpowers in view of Iran until before the victory of Islamic Revolution shows that Iran's geopolitical situation used to be evaluated    chiefly based on propounded variables in traditional geopolitical theories. In this connection, US policies placed emphasis on security issues while regional geopolitics was important for them as far as the Middle East provided energy resources for the West. According to classical geopolitical theories, geo-politicians placed much emphasis on distance, space and boundaries, i.e. the values that were important in the military technology phenomenon of the time. But in the current century, military power is no more an indicator for power of leadership of the countries in international arena. This is because we are at the threshold of an age when direct contact finds no chance to take place and new factors and variables determine our method for evaluating the geopolitical situation. Today, due attention to cultural and doctrinal factors in geopolitics has presented new areas of geographical companionship. Until before the victory of Islamic Revolution, Islam was considered a religion without political functions but the Islamic Revolution translated the potential political aspects of Islam into the practical aspects.

The Shia school of thought with its consolidated structure in Iran showed that this school is able to bring about the emergence of one of the greatest revolutions in history. This capability called the attention of many freedom movements to Iran and Islam. The critical role of Islam in international political arena brought about the revision of the geopolitics of the Muslim or majority Muslim nations. This became more important in the case of the world of Islam where there was sufficient access to the largest oil reserves and special geographical conditions.

In this connection, the critical geopolitical situation of the world of Islam and over one billion Muslim population have forced the Western theoreticians and politicians restudy Islam and Shia from geopolitical point of view. As far as political geography is concerned, the emergence of Islamic movements as one of the geopolitical variables boosts concerns over the other fixed variables. Given the tenets and special ideology of Islamic movements, their access to oil reserves, political power in the most critical regions and geographical transit greatly boost their importance. Therefore, the West always tries to prevent the emergence of Islamic movements as a serious threat. The above lines justify the reasons behind US concerns over the Islamic Revolution in the region. Such concern can be studied and analyzed according to the correlation between structure (geopolitical situation of the Shia community) and the ideologist agent (revolutionary ideology of Shi'ism) and its impact on Western interests in the region.
